David Morales - Human Rights Lawyer

David Morales is a human rights lawyer here in El Salvador who helped to bring the case of Romero’s assassination before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. In our interview with Morales, he spoke to us about the significance of the Romero case as well as the cases of the massacres of the Jesuit priests at the University of Central America and of civilians at El Mozote. All of these cases involve members of the Salvadoran military who were trained at the U. S. Army’s School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Georgia. He discussed with us the Amnesty Law of 1993, which has kept those responsible for these and many other human rights abuses from being brought to justice. Morales also made links between the military death squads of the civil war and clandestine groups that continue to perpetrate violence in El Salvador today.
